Community Service Awards
A COMPASSIONATE woman is theis year's recipient of the Gisborne East Coast Council of Social Services (GISCOSS) Nan Evans Award. Shirley Robertson was honoured with the annual award, which recognises people with strength and dedication who go the extra mile for the community.
Mrs Robertson was nominated for her work with Palliative Care, at St Andrews Presbyterian Church and at Dunblane Retirement Home. "This cheerful lady makes you feel special when you walk in the room" said Alison Crawford who nominated Mrs Robertson.
"Thirty years ago when Dr Carstens was a need to help with the sick and terminally ill, Shirley came forward and became the first Palliative care Coordinator- position held for 15 years.
"Her compassionate way with patients and their families saw so many families able to deal with that very sad time in thier lives. Shirley continues to be a "hands on" volunteer whenever she is needed"
Mrs Robertson helped to create the Open Door Centre at St Andrew's, organises the annual Alzheimers Cuppa for a cause fundraiser and is he happy face behind the trolley shop at Dunblane.
Murray Plamer and Ross Russell were awarded certificates fro GISCOSS that recognised their contribution to the community.
Both men were nominated by Manu Caddie who said they had spent "thousands of hours in voluntary service in our community, particularly on environmental issues"
"They have battled well-paid lawyers for local authorities and businesses who want to make it easier to destroy habitiat, pollute the air and waterways, and exclude the public from having an influence over decisions to protect or degrade tje natural environment" said Mr Caddie.
